About Grief and Loss

Grief is a natural emotional experience that follows a significant loss. Although most commonly associated with losing a loved one, we can also grieve the loss of a job, a relationship, a pet, our health, or anything representing an extension of ourselves. There is no “right” way to experience grief, as it is a deeply personal experience. Grief is a complex emotional process that may leave individuals feeling sad, angry, guilty, anxious, or lonely. Thoughts, memories, or dreams of the lost person or thing may remain prominently on your mind.

Physically, grief can induce tiredness, changes in appetite and sleep, headaches, or stomach problems. Mentally, grief can cause trouble focusing, confusion, or constant thoughts about the loss. Behaviorally, grief might lead to avoiding others, losing interest in things, or feeling restless. For many people, prolonged bereavement can make it difficult to return to a “normal” life again.

Fortunately, there are evidenced-based psychotherapy treatment options to help effectively move through grief. While grief is not something you just “get over,” it is possible to live with less pain and suffering. A focus of treatment is exploring meaningful ways to stay connected with your loved one, while also allowing yourself to still move forward one step at a time.
