About Trauma and PTSD
Psychological trauma refers to the specific emotional distress one experiences following a disturbing experience. Traumatic events may include accidents, crimes, natural disasters, or other unexpected events; these instances result in shock, denial, fear, helplessness, dissociation, confusion, or other negative reactions that make it difficult to function. In some instances trauma can result in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Some common reactions to trauma include:
Hyperarousal symptoms such as an increased startle response, irritability, insomnia, or hypervigilance.
Negative changes in mood and thoughts, including feelings of fear, guilt, anger, or shame, as well as distorted negative beliefs about oneself, others, and world. Some people also experience emotional numbness or detachment.
Avoidance symptoms such as staying away from trauma reminders or engaging in behaviors that prevent memories, thoughts, or feelings related to the event from surfacing (such as substance use).
Intrusive symptoms including nightmares, flashbacks, or troublesome memories of the trauma.
The impact of trauma can be long-lasting effects, if not addressed. Unresolved trauma can gradually restrict your life by limiting you to only doing thing that feel safe; you may stop engaging with certain people, places, or things that you used to enjoy. You may feel disconnected from relationships, become quick to anger, find it difficult to trust others, or be stuck in a loop of self-blame.
